Personal. Social and Health Education - PSHE
Our PSHE education gives pupils the knowledge, skills, and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe and to prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. It gives children the knowledge, skills and understanding that they need to stay healthy and safe, develop worthwhile relationships, respect differences, develop independence and responsibility, and make the most of their own abilities and those of others. When taught well, PSHE education helps pupils to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life.
The three core areas through which all aims are taught are: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World (including British Values, Citizenship, Economic Wellbeing and aspects of Careers education).
The Relationships and Health and Wellbeing (RHE) section of PSHE education is now compulsory in primary schools. Please see our Relationships and Health policy for more details and the government guidance for PSHE (links below):
In the EYFS, PSHE is taught throughout the whole curriculum and in circle time sessions. It is also taught through specific events and activities, such as charity events, as well as through other subjects.
There are also teaching opportunities during collective worship e.g. stories and discussion, Star of the Week Assembly. The whole school ethos and values promotes our work in PSHE and Citizenship, as set out in our Mission Statement and home-school agreement.
PSHE Intent:
Our PSHE curriculum sets out to imbue pupils at Manor with our core values; ‘Manners, Aspiration, Nurture, Open-mindedness and Resilience’. Our Manor values aim to ensure pupils develop positive wellbeing and good mental health by ensuring children understand how to look after themselves and how to look after those around them. We pride ourselves in creating a nurturing environment where pupils can express themselves within a safe and trusting climate. It is vital that our curriculum supports the principles of Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development, ensuring pupils understand the importance of British Values and that they understand how to keep themselves safe.
PSHE Implementation:
Our values form an intrinsic part of the day-to-day life at Manor Primary. Our Stars of the Week exhibit the qualities of, ‘Manners, Aspiration, Nurture, Open-mindedness or Resilience’ – or all of these together! These Stars of the Week are celebrated in the fortnightly whole-school newsletter and all classes display the Manor values within their environment. Staff deliver specific PSHE lessons, following the recently adopted 1 Decision scheme of learning. This scheme has received the Quality Mark from the PSHE Association. Of the scheme, it was noted by the Association that, ‘each module focusses on the key skills and characteristics involved in making healthy and informed choices, such as managing emotions, making responsible choices and managing peer pressure. 1decision covers many different aspects of personal safety, emotional and physical wellbeing, healthy relationships, and personal responsibility.’ The scheme supports the teaching and learning around the three core aspects of the PSHE Association Programme of Study – Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. Staff recognise the importance of this subject, and that it spreads across all aspects of the curriculum and all aspects of school life.
PSHE Impact:
Our PSHE curriculum allows pupils to become healthy, kind and considerate members of the local and wider community. It helps them to understand how they develop personally and socially and supports them with the many moral and social issues they will face as part of growing up. Our curriculum allows children to learn about their rights and responsibilities, and the rights and responsibilities of those around them, both in the local, wider, and world-wide community. Pupils should have a greater understanding of the diversity of communities around them and develop the tolerance and acceptance that is such a fundamental part of our specific Manor values. Ultimately, our curriculum gives children the opportunity to be the best individual they can be, having a positive impact on their own lives and consequently having a positive impact on everyone that is part of their lives, both now and in the future.
